week four - thursday night - luna - death-adjacent log
[Newt knows he got lucky with Hector. Ruin's going to be the real challenge, especially given that he doesn't truly know what he's up against. But he's confident in his plan, the first phase of which went over even better than anticipated, and the people here are stupider than he thought. Some part of him knows he shouldn't get cocky, but... It's almost impossible not to be.
His plan for Ruin's death hasn't taken nearly as much time to set up as Hector's, so it's still early in the night when he heads for the altar room, offering in hand, ready to lure Ruin into his trap. All he has to do now is beat her back to the pool, but that shouldn't—]
Oh. Uh, hi.
[Luna... isn't the last person he expected to see up and about during curfew. It makes sense, actually. He's had a gut feeling about her since the beginning.
That said.]
You're not here for me, are you?

[There's something very pleased in that single word -- with Newt, with herself, with the universe at large for this moment in time.]
My interest isn't just in Ruin, but in each god that becomes vulnerable. I'm looking for those who understand that the gods are the best route to ending this game of death quickly. Those willing to reach out and snatch the future with their own hands.
[She was out here looking for you and the other killers, big boy.]
If you're interested in ending Ruin yourself, then of course, by all means. But I think there are certainly ways we can do this together.

Was that your handiwork with Fortune last week, then?
[Color him impressed, if so.]

[To let others take the risks, she means.]
It seems that you were also not the killer, then.
[So, like, basically this. But in a good way, because—]
That means our numbers can only grow, especially if we can begin to connect as an alliance.

[Which, yes, this is an awful lot of trouble to go through just to avoid getting cursed.]
Do you have a lead on her killer, then? Or were you just hoping to stumble upon them tonight?

[A pause, while she turns over the new information.]
Then Ruin's message was not from the god killer, but you wished to align yourself with them nevertheless? They are truly elusive. [and she likes it] My purpose was threefold. Find the god killer, if I can. Find others willing to play this game in the most efficient way. Make sure Ruin is eliminated.
[She cocks her head, curiously.]
How badly does she hold grudges?

[He's not convinced. That's alright in his book, though. He's in no hurry to end the game.
He takes a moment to consider her words, though. Why did he leave the message? He's been wondering that since he did it. Mutilating himself has never been in his wheelhouse, no matter how determined he is. He chews on his lip.]
I... It's like you said. Focused chaos. By making everyone think Ruin's ex-follower was responsible for Fortune's death and then using the smokescreen of Disorder's consequence to disappear again, they'll try to make connections with Fortune's murder that don't exist. They'll make even dumber decisions if they're afraid.
[Or... something. It's a good enough explanation.]
I don't actually know, but given her attitude? I don't want to take any chances.

[Apparently she's snapped? She doesn't seem like she's snapped.
Her voice has hardened a little, her face is a little darker, but otherwise she seems much the same. Who knows if it's a function of being a robot or just a function of being herself; but it's probably why she can fly under the radar for the most part.
She considers Newt's face and his words for a moment. Smiles.]
... Of course. Misdirection and fear, and it all worked wonders at trial already the last week, didn't it? Ambition certainly helped pass the time with her tantrums. I'm sure there were many who didn't want Rachel Berry to take the consequences for her actions.
Given that, having more cards to play when it comes to Ruin is an advantage. What was your plan for her?
no subject
You refuse to tolerate death, and yet you're here to kill Ruin. There's no such thing as justified murder, Luna. I hope you're not under the illusion that we're doing anyone a favor.
[But the deaths are temporary. At the end of all of this, they'll be an unpleasant memory, and that's that. It would be different, surely, if their actions here had lasting consequences, but still. Murder is murder.]
I was going to drown her in the pool.
[He prefers to not get his hands dirty, if he can help it. At least not directly.]
You?
no subject
[The deaths are indeed temporary. And that's both a boon and something that isn't entirely relevant to her. She's been twisted for a long, long time, and none of this is new to her. Like the passing of the days or putting one foot in front of the other: death is simply the path on which she treads.
It is the face that she refuses to look into.
Lives are spent flowers she plucks along the way. They hardly change the scenery, but they are enough.]
As for Ruin, I intend to make it quick -- once her neck is broken, the true work goes into the crime scene itself. Misdirection. Connor is too well-informed and astute in trials; I also intend to remove him from the equation. Confusion. Ai Mizuno will tie things together, even if neither of us is truly connected with Fortune's fall. Chaos.
They could not even come close to the god killer last week. We could do well to learn from it.
no subject
Three, huh? That's ambitious of you. No wonder you're looking for a hand.
[Go big or go home, though. This is a plan that Newt can get behind.]
And where do you imagine me fitting into this equation? Outside of misdirection at the trial, I mean. I'm good at that.
