Name: Dr. Newton Geiszler
Canon: Pacific Rim
Age: 45
Background: WIKI LINK but tl;dr: Newt's from Earth circa 2035. The first movie was 10 years earlier, and at the time there were big nasty alien monsters attacking the planet, so humanity fought back with GIANT ROBOTS!! Newt was a scientist working with the giant robot people to figure out how to defeat the aliens. (Also the aliens are called Kaiju and the robots are called Jaegers.) As part of this, Newt mindmelded with a Kaiju brain for intel, but as a result got like permanently infiltrated by the alien hivemind (the Precursors, another alien species that actually bioengineered the Kaiju to use as weapons). 10 years later, Newt has been "possessed" by the Precursors and has been secretly working to reopen the link between Earth and the Precursors' world so they can come back and finish the job they started in the first movie. He's a bad boy. ):
Canon Point: PacRim Uprising, after his introduction at the Shatterdome in China and after he talks to Hermann, but before the demo and shit in Sydney (i.e. Mako's not dead yet there is time to undo this movie)
Personality: Here's the thing: Newt's brain has linked up with the Precursors. The Precursors are all part of a hivemind and Newt is technically now part of this too, except the Precursors very rarely use their influence directly. They do have the ability to take him over completely and sort of pilot his body, but that won't be happening in game so doesn't matter!! Even with the link between Newt and the Precursors severed, there are still two "sides" to Newt given that he's been heavily brainwashed by Precursor influence in the ten years since the first movie.
Before Precursor influence (preprecursor??? gonna pre) Newt was enthusiastic, optimistic, and though his negative qualitiessometimesusually got in the way of this, he was a good person at his core. That version of Newt still exists, but it's rare that he's able to shake off Precursor influence. When a glimpse of him does shine through, he's broken and scared, since he's aware that the Precursors are using him to kill off humanity and he doesn't think he's strong enough to fight them off.
The "main" version of Newt that we see most of the time is him acting under the influence of the Precursors without realizing it. The Precursors have sort of reprogrammed his brain so that he does what they want him to without the need to actively babysit him all the time. The influence comes in the form of nagging feelings or gut instincts that he can't quite make sense of, but he never questions too much since the Precursors won't let him. He's vaguely aware that something isn't right with him, but he never manages to pin down what, exactly. He blames it on stress most of the time.
All this to say, Newt's personality has been heavily manipulated by the Precursors but most of the time he's in control and not aware of the brainwashing. The Precursors have also exacerbated his worst qualities: He's super arrogant, selfish, condescending, and ruthless. He's not very enjoyable to be around, and that's by design, as the Precursors didn't want him having emotional attachments that could mess up their plans. A combination of Precursor influence and age have also mellowed him out in a sense, so he's not the energetic, constantly arguing weird nerd he used to be. These days, he's manipulative, willing to lose battles to win the war and to dismiss arguments rather than engaging with them.
Motivations: The Precursors have decided to send Newt into this because they want to use the god boon to help them take over Earth, so going into this, Newt's playing because he wants that same thing. The "real" Newt, however, is going to try to use this as an opportunity to save himself and either permanently sever the link between himself and the Precursors or, ideally, to do that plus undo the brainwashing. SIMPLE ENOUGH... But Newt is willing to do basically anything to accomplish either of these goals. If Precursor'd!Newt wins, breaking a few eggs something something omelette is no big deal to him since he's trying to kill the whole goddamn world anyway. If real!Newt manages to shake the brainwashing long enough to get the boon for himself, hey, breaking omelettes is still worth it because he's then saving his entire planet. The stakes are pretty fuckin high for him no matter how you spin it.
Moral Alignment: Good lord uhhh okay I'm gonna call Newt... NEUTRAL EVIL but tbh It's Complicated. Newt is heavily conflicted because without the Precursors reprogramming his brain, he's a good person. Chaotic Good, sticking with moral alignments. BUT the Precursors have heavily brainwashed him into being their puppet. In canon, the Precursors have a direct link to Newt's brain at all times which would make him pretty solidly evil, but since that connection is severed while he's in this game, Newt's "good" side will be more likely to muscle through. So uh, he'll lean more in either direction depending on how the game goes. For the sake of simplicity I'm gonna call him Neutral Evil since he's brainwashed side is gonna be the dominant "personality" in the beginning.
Item: Newt will have the hipster glasses he wears in the first movie.
Fail-safe: y e s let my nasty boy do a death
